Extra care housing

What is extra care housing?

Extra care housing is like sheltered housing. You have your own flat with your own front door.

The difference is, is that more care is available. A carer on site will help you plan your care based on your needs. Staff are there day and night to help in emergencies. They can help you with things like:

  • personal care
  • help with meals
  • other everyday activities

Extra care housing has shared spaces where you can meet other people who live there. This helps you feel part of a community and live well as they get older.

There are different options for living in extra care housing, including:

  • social rent
  • shared ownership
  • private rent
  • leasehold

Your local district or borough council may help you find extra care housing near you. You can find places in Surrey on Housing Care. You can find extra care places at Housing Care.
