Drawing landscapes with a bamboo pen & ink in the style of Van Gogh Workshop

Course intent

Discover Van Gogh’s drawing techniques and take home your own Van Gogh inspired landscape drawing. Through studying the pen strokes in Van Gogh’s pen and ink drawings learn how to make samples of his mark-making style and how to turn these into a finished landscape ink drawing

What will I learn?

You will select one (or more) of Van Gogh’s pen drawings for inspiration and replicate part, or all, of it

OR use his style for inspiration for your image of a landscape and will learn how to

• use a bamboo pen and ink
• replicate the texture and tones used by Van Gogh and make a variety of samples

before making a partial or complete drawing in his style.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for all ability levels.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Please bring:

• Cold Pressed Watercolour paper - A4 or larger. Or heavyweight cartridge paper (220gsm minimum)
• A bamboo pen (OR you can request in advance for the tutor brings one for you to buy from her)
• Any ink you already have or black/sepia ink
• Mixing Palette - to dilute the ink for a range of tones)
• The tutor will bring a choice of images of Van Gogh’s landscapes and you are welcome to bring your own images

  What can I do when I finish the course?

  Your tutor Helen Kelly teaches drawing and watercolour painting in Farnham on Tues mornings and evenings. And in Guildford on Friday mornings and has further Saturday workshops planned for the Spring term.
