Patchwork & Quilting - Stage 4

Course intent

Learners who are already skilled will have the opportunity to develop, refine and broaden their knowledge and skills in patchwork, quilting and appliqué. It will be delivered through instruction and hands-on experience and enable the development of interesting and creative quilts and projects.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • Design Techniques: Explore traditional & modern patchwork, quilting & applique techniques
  • Material Knowledge: Develop interesting designs & quilt projects
  • Craftsmanship: Develop your understanding of the tools and techniques required. Share quilting experiences with you peers
  • Production Process: Understand the process of turning a design into a physical object, including cutting, sewing, and finishing techniques
  • Workshop Practice: Understand the importance of a safe working environment and H&S requirements
  • Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    Stage 4 - This course is for learners with an enhanced skills base who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in this subject area at an improving and advanced level.

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    You need to bring:

    • fabrics and threads to complete your individual projects

    basic sewing equipment

    • pins
    • needles
    • scissors
    • tape measure etc
    • additional fabrics for testing and trailling techniques and machine stitches
    • notepad, pen and pencil

    Rotary cutting equipment and sewing machines belonging to the centre are available to use during the course. A ‘needs list’ will be sent out prior to the start of the courses which will include where to go to source fabric. If you have any queries, please email the tutor at adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk

    What can I do when I finish the course?

    In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto specific one-day workshops or further Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
