Course intent
This course is designed for those who have completed a beginner drawing course or have some basic experience and are ready to take their skills further. In Stage 2, you'll build on your existing knowledge and begin to develop a more personal, confident approach to drawing.
Through a variety of weekly projects, you'll be encouraged to experiment with different styles and materials while learning how to observe more closely and draw with greater intention.
We’ll explore a wide range of subject matter as well as draw inspiration from both contemporary artists and classical masters. There will be a life model for one session of this course.
What will I learn?
You will learn:
Design Techniques:
Develop key principles of perspective and composition to strengthen the structure of your work. Engage with a wide range of subject matter, including portraits, the human figure, landscapes and still life
Material Knowledge:
Develop a strong understanding of various materials by experimenting with pencil, charcoal, ink, and mixed media. Discover how different tools and surfaces affect your technique and creative outcomes.
Craftsmanship:
Advance your drawing skills by applying more complex techniques such as shading and proportion. Begin building a personal sketchbook or portfolio that documents your progress and creative development.
Production Process:
Study the work of influential and inspiring artists to deepen your understanding of visual language and to enrich your own artistic practice.
Workshop Practice:
Learn essential health and safety procedures in the studio environment, including the correct cleaning and maintenance of tools and materials, to ensure a safe, efficient, and professional workspace.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
Stage 2 - Suitable for learners who have completed stage 1 and would like to gain more experience and refine their skills within their chosen subject area. The focus will be on developing more control and proficiency in practice and learning and completing more complex projects.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
You need to bring:
- A notebook and pen
- An A3 or A4 Sketchbook (cartridge paper minimum 120gsm)
- 2B, 4B, 6B pencils
- Rubbers/ Erasers: (regular and putty/ kneaded)
- Pencil sharpener
- Blending stumps
Throughout the course you will also require various other drawing materials, and the tutor will advise you what you need in advance. This will probably include drawing materials you already have.
What can I do when I finish the course?
In discussion with your tutor you may like to progress onto another course or one-day specialist workshops with SAL.
