Photography - Stage 1

Course intent

For learners who wish to deepen your understanding of photography, this course will provide you with the skills and tools to enhance your creativity and technical knowledge. Get ready to let your imagination flow and take your photography to the next level! This is an ONLINE course.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • Design Techniques: Learn the fundamentals of photography. Explore a range of subject matter to broaden your creative skills and confidence.
  • Material Knowledge: Gain an understanding of how your camera works and the exposure triangle.
  • Craftsmanship: Develop your skills and techniques, with guidance on all of the technical aspects of the medium. Begin to build a personal sketchbook to document your creative journey.
  • Production Process: Study the work of professional photographers to enhance your own creative style.
  • Workshop Practice: Learn key health and safety procedures to maintain a professional studio environment. Understand the proper care, cleaning, and handling of tools and materials to support your ongoing creative practice

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    Stage 1 - This stage is for learners who are new to their chosen subject area. With the focus on introducing individuals to basic materials, tools, and techniques, and to inspire confidence in creative expression.

To take this course, you need to be working at Level 2, which means a minimum of GCSE Grade 4 (previously Grade C) or Functional Skills Level 2. If you're unsure about your level of English or have any concerns, please feel free to reach out via email.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You need to bring:

  • A notebook and pen
  • A fully ‘charged’ camera (& instruction booklet if you have it) & memory card

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto Photography - Stage 2, specific workshops or further Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
