Life & Portrait - Introduction to Drawing with Life Model - Beginners

Course intent

You will learn the skills needed to draw a figure from life. You will discover new techniques and strengthen existing observational drawing skills, working exclusively from the unclothed figure, and using a variety of poses.

What will we cover?

You will have a mix of poses ranging from quick gesture drawing to extended poses exploring the figure in space. Please note we will be working from an unclothed model.

  • measuring and proportion
  • composition and scale
  • negative space
  • rhythm and gesture
  • specific tuition on techniques for learners’ chosen materials
  • Safeguarding, Prevent & British Values

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    This is a mixed ability class, and all are welcome, whether you have no previous drawing experience or are looking to sharpen your skills. Your tutor will offer individual support and feedback throughout the session as together you experiment with different approaches.

For adults aged 18 years or older.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

• Pad of white A1 and/or A2 cartridge paper (120 gsm or more)

  • Some lighter-weight cheaper A1/ A2 paper for quick poses.
  • A selection of drawing media (pencils, rubbers, charcoal etc.)
  • A brush or two, if possible.
  • Water container
  • Please be prepared to get a little messy and wear suitable clothes and shoes

Boards and easels are provided at the centre.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto a longer life drawing course or courses in other media with Surrey Adult Learning. Help can be given to develop a portfolio to apply for Art college if required. You can study further by visiting art galleries. You can continue to develop your skills in Life-Drawing or other art classes.
