About this subject

If you are new to calligraphy or want to revisit some forgotten skills, these courses will set you on your way. We offer different types of calligraphy courses and one day workshops. Learn to write your own wedding invitations, gift tags, create your own projects and design unique layouts.

We are also offering a new papercraft course.

Our courses run over a period of weeks for a term. We have three terms in the year from September to July plus short courses at the start of summer. We also offer more specific one-day workshops throughout the year.

Enrolments open every term in March, July and November. If courses have already started you may still be able to join so please contact us.

Saturday and one day workshops

We offer a variety of one day workshops which is ideal for anyone wishing to try their hand at Calligraphy. We also offer more specialised workshops. Including festive gothic styles, italics, Japanese brush lettering and meditative Japanese brush work. Plus William Morris calligraphy and decoration.

Calligraphy

Learn how to use a broad edged nibs to create traditional letters. Then you will be able to use this writing in different projects. The aim is to bring this traditional art form into the 21st century.

You can then further you skills by exploring more advanced letterforms and layouts. We will encourage the creative use of tools and materials. Learners will focus on layout and design to make personal projects.

Papercraft

Learn different ways of working with paper including Gel Plate printing, paper folding, origami, collage, mark making and simple book structures.

Discounts and support with fees

We have many discounts and fee support options. These include money off your first course if you are a library member, Surrey Heritage user, or over 66.

We include a small charge in the fees. It covers the cost of materials used by tutors for demonstrations. The fee does not include the cost of materials and equipment used by learners, unless stated otherwise. If you have any questions, please ask when enrolling. We advise you not to buy extra materials for a course until your enrolment is confirmed.
