Course intent
In this workshop, you'll learn how to create stunning winter baskets and window boxes that will add colour and texture to your outdoor space during the colder months. You will explore the best plants for winter, design techniques for lasting displays, and practical tips for keeping your containers vibrant throughout the season.
What will I learn?
You will learn:
- Winter Plant Selection: Discover hardy plants that thrive in the winter months, including evergreen foliage, winter-blooming flowers, and seasonal accents like berries and twigs.
- Design Techniques: How to design winter baskets and window boxes with a focus on contrast, texture, and seasonal charm.
- Planting Methods: Gain hands-on experience in proper planting techniques for winter containers, ensuring that your plants remain healthy through the cold.
- Winter Care: Understand how to maintain your baskets and window boxes during winter, including watering, frost protection, and feeding.
- Seasonal Adjustments: How to transition your containers into the winter months, including tips for protecting plants from frost and extending the display life of your creations.
- Health & Safety: Proper handling and maintenance of tools to prevent injury in a safe working environment.

Discover your artistic potential and have fun along the way. SAL workshops are suitable for beginners and those looking to improve their skills. All materials will be provided (unless stated in course description), and you'll leave with your own handmade creations. No prior experience is necessary—just bring your creativity and enthusiasm!
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
You need to bring:
- An apron and closed toe shoes
- A notebook and pen
- A pair of gloves
- Plants and Materials (Optional): If you have specific plants or decorative elements you’d like to incorporate into your baskets/window boxes.

What can I do when I finish the course?
In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto Gardening Workshops or further Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
