Family Learning - Talking Maths Workshop for ESOL Parents

Course intent

You will develop your skills and knowledge of maths language and terms used in school so you can understand your child’s schoolwork. This will be positive for your family

What will I learn?

On this FREE online 2-hour workshop, you will work with the tutor and other parents and carers to improve your English language skills when talking about or doing maths with your children. You will:

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

If you are new to the UK or went to school in another country and are a parent/carer of a child aged 4-11, this workshop will help you understand the maths language your child will use at school. This will be delivered online via Zoom

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You will need to:

  • Have my camera on
  • Provide a mobile phone number and email address when you enrol so that we can contact you about
  • your course.
    • Please attend all sessions
    • A reliable internet connection
    • A computer/laptop/tablet or phone with a fully updated browser (preferably Google Chrome),
    • microphone and camera
      • A pen and paper
      • Check your email for detailed joining instructions two days before course starts.
      • Fill out `Tell us what you think` form
      • Contact us on family.learning@surreycc.gov.uk if you have any questions

        What can I do when I finish the course?

        At the end of this workshop, we will give you details of what you can move on to next, for example volunteering, further courses with Surrey Adult Learning, such as ESOL or Maths, or a join a college or get a job.

        Additional information

        We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
