Pilates - Mixed Abilities (Online)

Course intent

Pilates is a great way to build up your core strength and improve flexibility to keep you healthy and active. It focuses on alignment, breathwork and core stability. All of which makes it a fantastic stress-buster! Whatever your level of experience, you can feel these benefits in this Mixed Abilities course, where your tutor will ensure you are able to work at the right level for you.

What will we cover?

The intent of this course is to strengthen the body in an even way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness, wellbeing but also improve posture, balance and coordination.

Pilates is a non-aerobic approach to safe rebalancing of the body. Posture, strength and flexibility will be improved through a series of (mainly) floor-based exercises, introduced slowly over a period of weeks and then practised and perfected over the course. The tutor will give you variations for each exercise suited to your own level of experience and ability.

You will work on the core muscles to protect the spine in everyday movement and ensure the body is correctly aligned.

Our courses build on past learning, week by week, to develop new skills and abilities. You will find you make the most progress if you attend every lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You should wear comfortable clothing which allows a full range of movement, e.g. raising the arms above the head and bending over/crouching down. Pilates is practiced in bare feet or in socks. Have extra layers and/or a blanket available for relaxation.

You will need a non-slip Yoga mat (or a camping mat for the first lesson and the tutor will give advice). If your Yoga mat is new, please unroll it before the first lesson.

You will also need a block. If you don’t have one, a firm cushion, or thick book would be an acceptable alternative.

Some tutors use a stretch band or a ball for some exercises. This is not essential but will aid you in your workout. The tutor can advise on buying blocks, bands and balls, or provide alternative exercise variations if you do not have them.

You will also need drinking water.

For the Zoom lesson: you will need access to a computer/laptop/tablet with a reliable internet connection, working microphone, and webcam. If you struggle to read printed text on a screen, you may find it beneficial to have access to a printer to make your own hard copies of resources

What can I do when I finish the course?

You will be able to practise the exercises at home and fit them in to your daily routine.

In discussion with your tutor, you may wish to progress onto our Pilates - Improvers or Pilates - Experienced courses.
