Sewing - Make a Full Length BBQ or Craft Apron with Pockets - Beginners

Course intent

Enjoy a beginner’s sewing day learning the sewing skills needed to make a personalised apron for yourself or someone close to you. This full-length design with pockets is perfect for summer barbecues, protecting your clothes when you garden, cook or for when you do pottery, painting or other crafts. What will we cover?

• How to sew a useful full-length apron

  • Fabric choice and preparation
  • Cutting out
  • Using a sewing machine
  • Sewing straight and curved hems
  • Attaching tapes
  • Preparing and attaching patch pockets.
  • There will be an option to add a small amount of machined applique to add extra interest.

Creativity will be encouraged and there will be opportunity to share ideas

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner on their Individual Learning Plan.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This workshop is for beginners who are starting out on their sewing journey or those who are returning to sewing and need a refresher of the basic skills.

Learners with additional needs and disabilities are welcome. Please let staff know if you require any extra support when you enrol and they will arrange for a member of the Supported Learning Team to contact you to discuss your support needs. What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

A ‘needs list’ will be sent out before the start of the workshop which will include what you need to bring and where to source fabrics.

  • a notepad, pen and pencil
  • basic sewing equipment, eg pins, needles and fabric scissors etc
  • your own fabrics and thread for your individual project and for testing techniques and machine stitches.

Sewing machines belonging to the centre are available to use during the workshop.

What can I do when I finish the course?

This workshop can be studied in isolation or considered as an introduction into a much larger subject area that makes a creative hobby.
