Acrylic Painting - Coastlines & Seascapes Workshop - All Abilities

Course intent

On this one-day workshop you will develop your drawing and painting skills to create an acrylic painting of a lovely coastline & seascape.

What will we cover?

Working from photographs or similar found images of seascapes and coastlines, we will look at composition, colour, measurement, texture and tone. You will try different acrylic techniques and colour ranges to convey different atmospheres and the effect of light to depict a coastline /seascape.

You will gain confidence using both drawing and painting materials and be encouraged to take part in group discussions.

With access to one-to-one support the overall aim is to help you develop and complete a seascape painting using the techniques practised above.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This is not a workshop for absolute beginners, rather it is aimed at those with some experience of drawing and painting in Acrylics already and who want to explore their practice further.

If you are unsure about your level, please contact the tutor by emailing adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Learners are expected to provide their own materials.

Bring

  • A set of acrylic paints with as many basic (primary and secondary) colours as possible
  • White Acrylic paint
  • Any colours that will be helpful for painting your chosen coastline and seascape such as: various blues, yellows, purples, pinks, reds, greens, greys, browns etc…
  • Brushes
  • Acrylic paper or a board or canvas.
  • A palette to mix your colours on
  • Water jar or pot
  • Masking tape or similar (low tack tape).
  • A sketch book with cartridge paper
  • Pencils, an eraser & a sharpener.
  • Also please bring photograph/s of coastlines and/or seascapes that you wish to paint. (The Tutor will provide some images if you do not have anything suitable)

Advice is to wear old clothes or a cover such as an apron or smock as acrylic paint can stain clothes.

What can I do when I finish the course?

You can progress on to other longer courses, for instance your tutor, Amanda Buchan, runs longer term courses in Drawing and Acrylic painting at Guildford centre on a Monday and Friday morning and Farnham centre on a Thursday morning and afternoon. SAL also offers other drawing and painting classes. Your tutor can advise you on how to join other art groups, societies or to develop further within the same class, meet people with similar interests and make friends.
