Calligraphy - Improvers & Advanced

Course intent

This calligraphy course will explore the beautiful, ancient writing art forms that have developed and changed over centuries. We will study the chosen script in detail, looking at the tools and materials that were used, and explore the decoration of the time. By looking at both the ancient and modern you will be encouraged to experiment to bring your calligraphy into the 21st century. Enjoy the creativity of this absorbing art form that combines the beauty of lettering with the beauty of words. This is for learners with some calligraphy experience

What will we cover?

We will study a different style of writing each term, identifying the key characteristics and how the letters are formed so we can use them with our modern-day alphabet. We will use colour for writing or for backgrounds using water-based media and study how to create strong layouts.

This course will build on past learning, week by week, to develop new skills, and your own personal goals can be incorporated in discussion with your tutor. As a class, we choose a new topic each term for which we research ideas, select relevant text and appropriate decoration if required. You are also encouraged to follow your own course of study. To maximise your progress please attend every lesson where possible and complete any self-directed study
