Course intent

In this course you will learn the painting and drawing knowledge and skills needed to develop and expand your range of techniques whether you are a beginner or already have some experience. According to your level, you will develop drawing, painting and design skills, gaining a deeper understanding of the range of techniques and processes.   • the use of photographs and found images in developing an image,

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner to complete the required Individual Learning Plan.

For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Those with some experience of painting would be helpful but not essential. This course is useful for those who need a refresher as well as those who are just starting out.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Bring whatever Oil and/or Acrylic painting materials you may already have purchased or:

  • a graphite stick for the first session.
  • a pad of A3 cartridge paper
  • Soft grade of pencils (4B or 6B)
  • soft rubber
  • wear an apron or other protective clothing

Materials and resources you will need through the course will be discussed at induction.

There are no extra costs on this course

Pregnant learners are recommended to use water-based oils and walnut oils instead of solvents

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto further drawing, painting, life drawing and sculpture and illustration classes, or if you wish to put a portfolio together for entrance to an art college then this is a distinct advantage. Meet new people and make friends and visit galleries together.

Learners are expected to bring their own materials Some less common or unusual materials may be brought in by tutor or instruction given on where you can purchase items.
