Pottery & Claywork - A Day in the Pottery Studio

Course intent

Spend the day in the fully equipped pottery studio and enjoy working with clay. You will learn some basic hand building skills and you will also get an opportunity to try throwing a pot on a wheel.

What will we cover?

You will be shown useful hand building and decorating techniques that will enable you to make your own pots in the workshop and in the afternoon, there will be a session on throwing on a potters’ wheel.

Pots will be fired and glazed for you and will be available for collection at a later date.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Beginners are welcome and if you have attended a workshop before you can work on more complex projects.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

It is advisable to wear old casual clothes as clay can be messy and to wear sensible, closed toe shoes; the wearing of an apron is also recommended.

Please bring refreshments or change for the coffee machine onsite.

What can I do when I finish the course?

There are longer day and evening courses with Surrey Adult Learning and one day pottery workshops on different topics.

Additional information

Basic materials/technician costs are included. However, learners who choose to work on large projects may be asked to pay additional costs for clay and firing depending on the size. As a guide, learners are asked to work on pieces no higher than15 inches (38cms) and no wider than 12 inches (35cms). We are only able to fire work that has been produced in the class using materials provided by SAL.

If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
