Watercolour & Acrylic Painting - Beginners

Course intent

In this Beginners course you will get to grips with the mediums of both Watercolour and Acrylic Painting. You will learn the basic knowledge and skills required and will be guided on your journey through a series of exercises learning a range of styles, from quick and simple to more detailed and realistic.

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner to complete the required Individual Learning Plan.

For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is designed for beginners (and those who may have completed a one-day workshop). The tutor will be teaching techniques and skills step-by-step. This means that all learners will be able to watch each part of the process before having a go themselves.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

• Set of acrylic paints (Tutor uses System 3), mountboard cut to A4 size pieces, brushes size 2, 4 & 6 (Tutor uses Windsor & Newton Cotman brushes)

  • Dinner plate as a mixing palette, cling film to cover plate after class & stop paint drying out, jar for water, pencil (Tutor uses 3H) & eraser.
  • Set of Watercolour paints (pans not tubes), 300gsm watercolour paper, mixing palette
  • What can I do when I finish the course?

    In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto further Watercolour, Acrylic or Oil Painting classes with SAL
