Watercolour Painting and Drawing Techniques - All Abilities

Course intent

In this course, you will learn the knowledge and skills needed to develop and expand your range of techniques. According to your level, you will develop watercolour painting and design skills, gaining a deeper understanding of the range of techniques and processes. Through repetition and building basic principles and techniques this course will help you gain confidence with your observational ability and recording what you see in a creative, personal way.

What will we cover?

• Drawing techniques

  • Watercolour techniques
  • Getting the correct consistency with water
  • How to apply watercolour paint
  • Brush techniques
  • Washes (layering, flat and graduated)
  • Shading, highlights and shadows
  • Colour, the blending of colour and the use of colour theory.
  • Tonal values to help with the luminosity of the image
  • Composition
  • Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values
  • The importance of a clean and tidy studio

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner to complete the required Individual Learning Plan.

For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

All Abilities – specifically for those with little or no experience of drawing and painting as well as those who would like to develop their skills further

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Please bring to the first session:

  • A pen and notebook
  • A ruler
  • A4 cartridge paper (tutor recommends Daler Rowney or Frisk)
  • Pencils: 2H, HB, B, 2B, 4B (tutor recommends Staedtler Mars Lumograph).
  • A sharpener or craft knife
  • A plastic rubber and a putty rubber

Other items will be required later including watercolour paper, paint and brushes – the tutor will discuss painting equipment once you have started the course. If you have any queries before the course starts, please email the tutor on adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk to discuss materials

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto further watercolour courses, onto accredited courses or prepare for exhibition or submit work to competitions
