Calligraphy - Advanced

Course intent

In this advanced calligraphy course you will further your skills and techniques by exploring more advanced letterforms and layouts. The creative use of tools and materials will be encouraged and learners will concentrate on layout and design skills to create personal projects.

Enjoy the well-being benefits gained through working in a friendly, creative learning environment

What will we cover?

• Explore developing scripts previously studied and advancing techniques and materials used

  • Pursue individual interests and scripts that are of interest. Variations will be studied alongside design and layout
  • Learners will be encouraged to produce personal pieces to share with the group
  • Additionally, examples of work by contemporary and historical calligraphers will be included for study during the lesson
  • Videos and supporting documents will be available to learners to print off/download and there is the opportunity for private comments with the tutor.
  • Safeguarding, Prevent & British Values

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner to complete the required Individual Learning Plan.

For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for more advanced learners who are already confident using a broad-edged pen and are familiar with the basic scripts of Foundation Hand and Italic, together with Roman Capital and their variation, Gothic and Uncial. You should also be confident using gouache and when creating paste-ups for layouts.

Please contact the tutor Claire Honeywood by email Claire.Honeywood@surreycc.gov.uk if you are not sure about your level.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Materials:

  • your usual drawing board.

Any other specialist equipment required will be discussed during the lesson.

What can I do when I finish the course?
