Drawing & Painting - Oil Painting - Improvers

Course intent

On this course you will be taught a range of techniques, which will help you to advance your oil painting skills to the next level. You will be given practical information and individual tuition from our very experienced tutor.

What will we cover?

You will learn the following:

  • Individualised instructions & the opportunity to experiment
  • Brushwork and palette knife techniques to create the effect that you aim for
  • How to create a successful composition
  • Improve on your colour mixing and how to use mixing mediums
  • Developing your own style / experimenting with a variety of styles
  • Develop your creativity & improve through practice, tuition and discussion
  • Safeguarding, Prevent & British Values

Teaching is individualised to take into account the stages of development and aptitudes of individual students, as well as their individual learning goals, therefore there is little whole class teaching and the majority of teaching is on a one-to-one basis as the tutor teaches each student in turn throughout time in the class. A supportive environment is fostered within the class and group discussions and peer learning are encouraged. The tutor undertakes demonstrations with individual learners and the whole group as appropriate.

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner to complete the required Individual Learning Plan. For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for those who have some experience of painting in oils but would like further guidance and tuition. You do not need to be proficient in oil painting but it is not suitable for a complete beginner. • A3 oil painting pad or a blank canvas
  • Basic set of oil paints or tubes of titanium white, alizarin crimson, yellow ochre, cerulean blue, but you may find basic sets more cost effective

  • Palette or pad of palette paper
  • Drawing pencil

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto the next term’s course to further develop your skills or join a course to study a different medium. Your tutor can assist if you wish to build a portfolio of entry to Further Education or guide you to exhibit your work, join art groups or give advice about external providers.
