Patchwork & Quilting - Beginners

Course intent

In this course you will learn the basic knowledge and skills to successfully work in patchwork & quilting. You will begin your journey by developing your sewing, cutting and assembling skills. You will be shown the basic techniques so that you can use them to make a quilt. We will also explore exciting quilt designs and be inspired for future projects.

Enjoy the well-being benefits gained through working in a friendly, creative learning environment.

What will we cover?

Over these weeks we will look at:

  • Fabrics
  • Straight grain and cross grain
  • Colour and contrast
  • Cutting
  • Sewing
  • Assembling pieces into a whole
  • Hand Quilting
  • Design
  • Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner to complete the required Individual Learning Plan.

For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This inspiring course is for beginners who would like to explore Quiltmaking. It would be an advantage if you attended the ‘Patchwork & Quilting - Patchwork for Complete beginners’ course but this is not essential. If you are a returning learner having just completed a previous 6-week course, the tutor will ensure that you do not repeat the same information but instead will refine and build on your existing skills.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You will need:

  • fabric – at least 3 quarter metres in 3 different shades – matching or contrasting colours

o 25cm a light colour

o 25cm of a medium colour

o 25cm dark in colour

Equipment:

  • large sharp scissors for fabric cutting
  • scissors for paper cutting
  • small snipping scissors
  • pins
  • needles
  • thread
  • propelling pencil (because they’re always sharp)
  • accurate ruler
  • Template plastic – this is sold in quilting suppliers. If you can get to a shop, you can usually buy 1 sheet, so it’s inexpensive, but very useful.

The first lesson will be hand-sewing, but most techniques can be hand or machine. If you wish to use your own sewing machine, please bring it to the lessons after week 1. Make sure you have all the parts, and it is serviced and working.

What can I do when I finish the course?

On completing this quilting course, you can progress to ‘Patchwork & Quilting - Beginners’ in the Spring and Summer Term where you can further develop your skills.
