Calligraphy for Hongkongers BN(O) - Beginners

Course intent

This introduction to calligraphy will show you how to write using a square cut pen and how to use the writing to make some decorative quotations and cards. Calligraphy has developed over centuries and so we will look back at old manuscripts, learn how they were made, and use the style of writing in our work.

Important

This course is taught in English and will be right for you if you're aged 18 or over and your English language speaking level is intermediate or advanced. Before booking for your place, please use our English Self-Assessment Form to check your level.

If you are already attending one of our English for Hongkongers BN(O) courses, please make sure that this course is at a different time to your English course.

Please only enrol yourself. Please do not enrol on behalf of anyone else.

If you need any further information, please email hkenglish@surreycc.gov.uk.

What will we cover?

Using a broad edged metal nib and pen holder, you will learn how to form the letters of the alphabet, then write words and sentences. You will learn how to set out a page of writing, mix and write with paints or ink for added colour and use the script in simple projects. We will find quotations that look at festivals of the year from around the UK and those celebrated in our multicultural society.

As experience grows, you will work on more complex projects and layouts and include more decorative elements in your work.

Support is given with your individual goals and calligraphy using a pointed nib can be included later in the course.

You will need to complete some course documentation to help assess your progress.

Please attend every lesson, where possible, to maximise your progress.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This is a class for complete beginners and those who may have a little calligraphy experience who wish to renew their skills. Please contact the tutor if you have any queries about the course or about your skill level on: adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Learners will be supplied with pens, nibs, ink or paint and paper. Drawing boards are supplied at the centre although learners may wish to invest in one once they become more experienced.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto another calligraphy course or workshop and learn different styles of writing through SAL. Your tutor can advise you about external providers, for example, membership of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators (SSI) and the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society (CLAS) will give a wider overview of the calligraphic world and opportunities to enrol on workshops, enter exhibitions and join the CLAS Ladder of Progress.

Local calligraphy societies also organise workshops and talks. Information can be supplied by your tutor.
