Watercolour Painting & Drawing for Hongkongers BN(O) - All Abilities

Course intent

Whether you are a beginner or already have some experience of watercolour painting and drawing, you will learn the knowledge and skills needed to develop and expand your range of techniques. Enjoy the well-being benefits gained through working in a friendly, creative learning environment.

This course is taught in English and will be right for you if you're aged 18 or over and your English language speaking level is intermediate or advanced. Before booking for your place, please use our English Self-Assessment Form to check your level.

If you are already attending one of our English for Hongkongers BN(O) courses, please make sure that this course is at a different time to your English course.

What will we cover?

The course will cover:

  • Drawing techniques
  • Watercolour techniques
  • Getting the correct consistency with water
  • How to apply watercolour paint
  • Brush techniques
  • Washes (layering, flat and graduated)
  • Shading, highlights and shadows
  • Colour, the blending of colour and the use of colour theory.
  • Tonal values to help with the luminosity of the image
  • Composition

Through repetition and building basic principles and techniques this course will help you gain confidence with your observational ability and recording what you see in a creative, personal way. Clear tutor demonstrations will enable you to understand all of the techniques taught.

The course will build on past learning, week by week to help you gradually develop new skills, so attendance at every lesson is recommended. As well as group discussion you will have access to one-to-one support.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

All Abilities – specifically for those with little or no experience of drawing and painting as well as those who would like to develop their skills further.

Courses will be taught in English and for learners who self-assess at being Intermediate level or above.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Please bring to the first session:

  • A pen and notebook
  • A ruler
  • A4 cartridge paper (tutor recommends Daler Rowney or Frisk)
  • Pencils: 2H, HB, B, 2B, 4B (tutor recommends Staedtler Mars Lumograph).
  • A sharpener or craft knife
  • A plastic rubber and a putty rubber

Other items will be required later including watercolour paper, paint and brushes – the tutor will discuss painting equipment once you have started the course. If you have any queries before the course starts, please email the tutor on adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk to discuss materials.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto further watercolour courses, onto accredited courses or prepare for exhibition or submit work to competitions.
