Cookery (LD)

Course intent

Develop skills to prepare and cook simple healthy dishes and learn about kitchen safety and hygiene, whilst improving your math skills.

What will we cover?

During this course you will:

• Identify different cooking methods.
• Recognise different equipment needed for cooking
• Follow basic hygiene and safety rules when handling food and equipment.
• Prepare simple dishes using different cooking methods
• Explore healthy alternatives and make choices.
• Recognise how to store food and drink
• Improve confidence and social skills through participation in group discussions.

  Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

  This course is for Entry Level learners with a learning disability, it is designed to help learners progress from their individual starting point to build confidence, independence, and social skills for everyday life.

You must be able use kitchen equipment with support and guidance and follow health and safety practices.

Please advise us of any allergy or specific dietary requirements so the tutor can suggest alternative ingredients.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You will need to bring with you; clean oven gloves, an apron, a tea towel and container to safely take your food home.

You need to wear suitable clothes and closed toe shoes.

Bring a pen and reading glasses if you use them.

If you have someone supporting you in the class, they will need to follow our guidelines for support workers and sign a Personal Assistant Agreement.

What can I do when I finish the course?

After this course you could progress to another supported learning course, or further courses with Surrey Adult Learning. We will meet with you to give information, advice and guidance on your next step.
