Independent Life Skills (LD)

Course intent

Develop a range of independent life skills and awareness of safety, hygiene and healthy living, incorporating online safety, whilst improving literacy and communication skills. Improve your confidence, communication, and social skills through participation in a variety of activities.

What will we cover?

During this course you will have the opportunity to:

  • Recognise how to manage time and money.
  • Identify how to stay safe online, such as social media/making purchases.
  • Establish how to find and use local services.
  • Recognise health, safety at home and how basic first aid.
  • Identify different equipment needed for cooking and how to use them safely.
  • Use equipment and utensils and clean and store them safely.
  • Explore healthy alternative food choices to prepare and cook.
  • Recognise the value of exercise,and how changes can improve health.
  • Explore hobbies and plan and participate in a mini enterprise sale.
  • Develop an understanding of relationships and appropriate behaviour.
  • Establish how to travel safely and stay safe in the dark.
  • Improve confidence and social skills by taking part in group discussions and activities.

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    This course is for Entry Level learners with a learning disability, it is designed to help learners progress from their individual starting point to build confidence, independence, and social skills for everyday life.

You must be able to follow guidance on health and safety and be ready to work as part of a group.

You need to wear clothing that does not restrict movement and is appropriate for the course (e.g. tracksuit or loose-fitting clothes) and closed toed shoes.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Bring a pen and reading glasses if you use them.

If you have someone supporting you in the class, they will need to follow our guidelines for support workers and sign a Personal Assistant Agreement.

What can I do when I finish the course?

After this course you could progress to another supported learning course, or further courses with Surrey Adult Learning. We will meet with you to give information, advice and guidance on your next step.
