Course intent
Belly Dance is the dance of the Middle East and it's a fun way to tone your muscles and build up core strength. This is an easy to follow class that will develop your movement skills quickly - you’ll soon be shimmying to Arabic beats and wiggling your way to fitness!
The intent of this course is to learn basic belly dance moves and combinations, to build strength and develop flexibility.
What will we cover?
You will learn low-impact Belly Dance moves, steps and combinations, at beginner level, while developing your body awareness and general dance skills.
You may learn a choreographed dance routine, or work on more freestyle interpretation.
You may learn to dance with a prop.
Our courses build on past learning, week by week, to develop new abilities. You will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
This course is designed for complete Beginners or those with fewer than six months’ experience of belly dance lessons. It is also suitable for belly dancers who have had a long break and wish to restart their practice.
This course is designed to build your skills, throughout the year. If you are joining the course in January or April, there will be other learners who have done one or two terms already, creating a mix of levels within the Beginner range. Your tutor will help you to learn the basics to catch up, but you may find you have to do more home practising to get the full benefit of the course.
As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
You will need to wear comfortable clothing which allows a full range of movement, e.g. raising the arms above the head and bending forward/crouching down.
Belly dance is usually practised in bare feet, but soft-soled shoes, such as ballet pumps, would be fine, if you prefer to wear shoes.
You may wish to wear a hip scarf. If you wish to acquire your own belly dance hip scarf, the tutor would be able to suggest suitable vendors, but it is not essential.
There are no extra costs on this course.
What can I do when I finish the course?
At the end of the term, you may wish to re-enrol on the next Belly Dance - Beginners course, and at the end of the academic year, in discussion with your tutor, you may wish to join a Belly Dance - Improvers course.
