Description

This is a bank (zero hours) contract. The amount of work Instructors are offered depends on the number of requests for training we receive. Some periods are busier than others and there are some periods when no work is on offer. This is a permanent contract with Surrey County Council standard terms and conditions, including pension.

If your application is successful and you also successfully obtain your Cycling Instructor qualification, there may be an option to have an annualised hours contract in addition to the bank contract. This means that you will agree to work a fixed number of hours per year. You will then be paid the same amount each month regardless of any monthly fluctuations in your hours of work. 

Your place of work would be where the training is delivered. We deliver cycle training in all parts of the County but endeavour to offer work to Instructors that does not involve too much travel. You will receive travelling expenses at Surrey County Council standard rates. 

We will provide the training you will need to obtain and maintain your Cycling Instructor qualification.

About the role

You would be joining the Cycle Training Team in the Highways and Transport Service. The Team trains over 15,000 people per year across the County, mainly at schools.

Job details

Surrey County Council is an accredited Bikeability cycle training scheme and we work to the National Standard for cycle training.

Successful applicants will need to work towards obtaining the "Level 2 Award in Instructing Cycle Training" qualification. This includes a provisional accreditation course that is four full days. We will support you to achieve that, including providing the necessary training and experience. We also provide Continuing Professional Development which is compulsory, such as First Aid and Safeguarding.

Most of our training is delivered by Instructors working in teams, although we do also offer training at one-to-one or very low ratios that can be delivered by a single Instructor.

Whilst on a bank contract you do not need to commit to working all day or every week, you do need to be available for a complete individual course. For 'Bikeability Level 1' courses, it is usually four hours work on a single morning. For 'Bikeability Level 2' courses it is generally two hours work per day over 5 days; at larger schools you may be booked for up to three courses per day in school time - two courses in the morning and one course in the afternoon. We also offer 'Pedals' training which 1.5 hours work per course and we usually run two courses in a single morning. The 'work hours' for all courses include pre- and post-teaching administration time.
