Then we'd like to hear from you about joining our Cycle Training Team. Most of our training is delivered by Instructors working in pairs at schools, both playground and on-the-road training.

Surrey County Council is an accredited Bikeability scheme and we work to the National Standard for cycle training. As a new Instructor you would receive training, observe experienced Instructors delivering courses, then be a 'third' Instructor to help build your confidence and skills. The reward of the job is in seeing how your riders progress.

To be considered for interview for this position, you must submit a personal statement; a CV by itself is not sufficient. The personal statement is something in your own words that shows you have understood what the Cycling Instructor job is about and that you are a suitable candidate. Your personal statement must include how you:

  • Have an interest and understanding of the needs of children who are trying to improve their cycling skills. If you have professional or voluntary experience working with children, so much the better - it does not have to be cycling-related
  • Have reasonable 'local journey' cycling skills, including negotiating junctions and sharing the road with traffic. A practical assessment is part of the interview
  • Meet the availability requirement - you do not need to commit to working all day or every week but you do need to be available for a complete individual course
  • Any other skills or experience you could bring to the role

The starting hourly rate is £13.22 which includes annual leave allowance. There is annual pay progression to the top of the grade subject to satisfactory performance. You can also opt-in to the Local Government Pension Scheme. We have positions available at various places across Surrey and you will work at schools which are local to you.

Full training will be provided along with continuing professional development. There are additional allowances for the equipment you need, such as wet weather gear. You will receive travelling expenses at Surrey County Council standard rates.

Additional information

The amount of work you will be offered will depend on the number of requests for training we receive. Some periods are busier than others and there are some periods when no work will be on offer. In busy periods you could be allocated 20-30 hours of work per week. Some courses run from Monday to Friday, for at least part of each day, so you will need some all-week availability. Work is offered using a calendar system; you will enter any periods you will not be available for work.
