End Stigma Surrey has more information.
What is stigma?
Stigma and discrimination can make life harder for people with mental health problems.
It can:
- make you lose friends
- stop people from joining everyday activities
- make it hard to get a job
- stop people asking for help
- cause health problems
- lead to money issues
A small survey in 2020 asked people where they faced stigma. 66 people replied. We can’t draw firm conclusions from this survey.
Survey results
People said they felt stigma from:
- 18% – Jobcentre
- 20% – police and emergency services
- 23% – benefits and housing
- 26% – hospitals
- 26% – mental health services
- 34% – GP practices
- 41% – workplaces
- 45% – friends and social groups
What’s next?
Everyone can support mental health in:
- workplaces
- schools
- daily life with family and friends
Always think about ways to raise awareness and stop stigma.
A new Time to Change website will share:
- stories
- ideas
- resources
Together, we can end stigma in Surrey.
