Ready for emergencies
The Fire Service has changed a lot in the last few years. We face different challenges and our firefighters need to be more adaptable than ever before.
Here's just a sample of emergency situations firefighters deal with:
- road, rail and air collisions
- widespread flooding
- water rescue incidents
- emergencies that may involve hazardous materials
Fighting fires and saving lives is a crucial part of the firefighters role. So is preventing fires and accidents from happening in the first place. We're looking for firefighters who can switch from being reactive to a preventative in any given situation.
Working with the community
Surrey Fire and Rescue Services (SFRS) work closely with the community. Firefighters talk to people and listen to their issues and concerns. They provide advice and expert knowledge, and look for ways to offer solutions. They visit schools and work with children to raise awareness of fire dangers, such as fireworks. Firefighters also work with people to raise awareness of fire prevention, escape routes and any hazards at home or in a workplace.

Eligibility to join SFRS
It's an exciting time to join SFRS. Whatever your background, ethnicity, sex, gender, religion or sexual orientation, we want to hear from you.
You can apply at the age of 17 years and six months, but can't join until you are at least 18 years old. There is no upper age limit.
After applying to join us, you will go through a selection process that involves physical and mental tests. For example, you will need to pass a series of physical and fitness assessments, which include equipment assembly and equipment carry.
