Smoke alarms save lives

When was the last time you tested your smoke alarm?

You are around nine times more likely to die in a fire if you do not have a working smoke alarm in your home, so it is incredibly important that you have the correct smoke alarms in your home, and that you test them regularly.

Smoke alarms are easy to purchase and install and could save lives. You can buy them from as little as £10 from DIY stores, supermarkets and online.

You need at least one smoke alarm on each level of your home, but you should have more. Fit smoke alarms in your hallways, landing and any room where a fire could start. For example any room where you have appliances that are left plugged in.

Ensure any alarms you buy have a current British Standards safety mark, and choose smoke alarms with a ten year or long-lasting sealed battery. Follow the instructions when installing your alarms, they all work in different ways.

If you have any concerns about installing smoke alarms, or if you or anyone you live with is a vulnerable person, please get in touch with Surrey Fire and Rescue Service and book a free home fire safety visit by calling 0800 085 0767 or visit the free home fire safety visit web page.
