Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans - advice for parents and carers

An Education Health Care (EHC) Plan is for children and young people who need more support than an education setting can normally provide.

It is a legal document for children and young people aged 0 to 25 who have special educational needs or disabilities (SEND). Local authorities must make sure the support in the plan is provided.

An EHC plan includes:

  • the child or young person’s views, wishes and hopes for the future
  • their education, health and social care needs
  • the goals (outcomes) they are working towards
  • the support they must receive and who will provide it
  • the name of their school or education setting
