Let's Get Baking
Brian Freeland was given a surprise gift of a Cookery course from his daughter Sarah. Brian is widowed and lives alone at the young age of 88. A visit to the Woking Centre offered an opportunity to catch up with the "bake-off" group, led by expert cookery tutor Coral Turan.
Brian and the learners were having great fun at the Woking Centre creating a savoury, lattice pastry chicken and leek pie to serve six. Learner Brian is thriving in the class, upskilling and enthusiastic and he was proud to report that he has moved away from microwave meals for one to inviting his family for healthy and nutritious homemade meals.
Cheerful Brian fully participates in the group and said "I feel like I've achieved something, I would never have gone down this road before!"
Brian has taken to courses with Surrey Adult Learning (SAL) like a duck to water and feels at home in the class. He shared his pride in creating tasty meals and even having a go at cake baking; he made a raspberry roulade cake and explained the technical steps involved to create the cake. Brian offered a slice to his grandson who did not believe it was handmade by Brian. It looked so professional he assumed Brian had bought it from a shop, much to Brian's delight!
To add to Brian's sense of fun, he recently made a stunning double sponge cake with a filling in the middle that was served in a restaurant to celebrate his Grandson's 17th Birthday.
Tutor Coral is delighted to see learners coming along and having fun in her class whilst learning fundamental skills for life. Recipes are chosen with care, offering a range of savoury and sweet options and Coral sends out the recipe ingredient list a week before each class by email, allowing learners to go out and select items. For certain learners this task encourages engagement with the community, decision making and evaluating the cost of food.
The courses with SAL have given structure and purpose to Brian's week. He looks forward to coming to class and the friendships made along the way. Brian insisted on thanking his thoughtful daughter, Sarah, for arranging courses and tutor Coral, who is a real asset to Surrey Adult Learning for her encouragement, clear instruction and her ability to create a wonderful atmosphere in the classroom.
Brian said "We'd be lost without her, she's very special!"
