Department for Transport capital funding

The Department for Transport (DfT) provides capital funding for Highway Maintenance using a needs-based formula based on the highway assets each local authority is responsible for.

From 2025/2026, in order to receive the full level of funding available from the DfT, authorities are expected to publish information about their highway maintenance activities to help local taxpayers see the difference that funding is making in their areas.  The link to the information about Surreys highway maintenance can be found below.

Information on how allocations are calculated and details of allocations for 2020 to 2026 can be found on the gov.uk highway maintenance funding webpages.

Our current and future programmes of capital maintenance can be found on our highway maintenance investment programme webpage.

The Department for Transport expects all local highways authorities to publish information about their highways maintenance activities. You can find this information on our Local highways maintenance transparency report page.
