Enjoy Surrey’s colourful countryside this autumn

Amazing scenery right on your doorstep

Autumn brings a splash of rich colour to Surrey, particularly as we are the most wooded county in England. It's a great time of year for you and your family to get outdoors and immerse yourself in the natural environment.

For those wanting to explore the countryside on foot, here's our suggestions of some of the best walking routes in our county:

Basingstoke Canal

Enjoy lovely views along this pretty canal that starts near New Haw in Surrey, where it flows into the River Thames. You can walk any section of the canal of a distance that suits you or you can cycle or explore by boat. Watch for the varied wildlife, have fun in canoes or kayaks and savour the tranquil site.

Find details on the Basingstoke Canal web page.

Staffhurst Wood

This pretty and ancient woodland is well-known for its autumn colour, tranquillity, and array of wildlife, pond life, flora and fauna. With two flat trails through the woodland, you can really enjoy the countryside on your doorstep.

Find more information on the Staffhurst Wood web page.

Norbury Park

Take in the scenic views of Box Hill from the hilltop and enjoy various walks through woodland, farmland and grassland, whilst discovering an abundance of wildlife and the River Mole. There is also a great new natural play area in the Young Street carpark.

For details on how to get there, visit the Norbury Park web page.

Supporting local businesses

Some of our countryside sites offer on-site catering, where you can get a warming refreshment after your walk. Here is a list of our sites where you will find catering, please check the Surrey Countryside web pages for days and times of opening;

We want everyone to enjoy Surrey's countryside, so would like to remind everyone to follow the Countryside Code.

Take a look at some short videos profiling the Countryside Code Champions, who each focus on an area of the code that is important to them.
