Explore England’s first ‘World Craft Town’
Nestled in the rolling Surrey Hills, you will find the market town of Farnham. This historic location is perfect for anyone who considers themselves a ‘culture vulture’ or a ‘history buff’. There is a bustling art scene, markets galore, historical sights, and a rich heritage with links to the medieval monarchy and church.
Here are some suggestions on the best things to see, do and know about Farnham.
Farnham Castle
Did you know that in medieval times, Farnham was a favourite residence of the bishops of Winchester? Several reminders of this still remain in Farnham today, one of which is Farnham Castle.
Founded in 1138 by Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester and brother of King Stephen, Farnham Castle is one of the remaining great medieval Houses in England. It boasts an impressive 900 year old motte and 'shell keep', as well as the Bishop’s Palace building and over 5 acres of gardens. Find out more about the castle’s history and how to visit.
St Swithun’s Way
Another reminder of Farnham’s links to the Saxon capital of Winchester is St Swithun’s Way. This 34-mile track runs from Winchester Cathedral, through the Itchen Valley to the path along the River Wey to reach Farnham. So, why not visit Farnham to mark St Swithun’s Day on 15 July – hopefully there won't be any rain!
