How to care for your lungs this June

‘Love Your Lungs’ Week takes place from 23 June and is a great opportunity to raise awareness about ways to keep our lungs healthy and happy.

Did you know that lots of things we do every day can impact our lungs, like air pollution, lifestyle choices, and even our diet?

Here are three super simple tips to help boost your lung health:

Get active

Regular exercise increases the strength of the muscles around your lungs and the rest of your body. Being active every day helps us all to stay healthy, so why not take advantage of the longer days with an evening walk or cycle? Healthy Surrey has more get active tips, including walking groups, family activities and classes.

Visit Asthma+Lung for more information about the benefits of exercise on lung health.

Stop smoking support

One of the best things you can do to look after your lungs is to stop smoking. When you stop, lung function is improved, leading to reductions in any cough, wheezing or other breathing problems. Your longer-term risks of cancer, lung disease, heart disease and stroke will also be significantly reduced

One You Surrey provides free stop smoking support and quit aids like patches, e-cigarettes and gums. The service is based on the latest behaviour change research, so you'll be in good hands with a supportive team of trained advisors. Take a look at Tara and Tobias’ quitting stories.

Clean Air Day

Clean Air Day (19 June) raises awareness on how air pollution affects our health and the planet, and how we can improve air quality. Air pollution can affect every organ in the body, and results in over 36,000 deaths in the UK every year. In a recent survey, Surrey residents said they really noticed the air quality improve during pandemic lockdowns and that high traffic areas affect their health regularly.

Small actions can make a difference, so this summer enjoy active travel activities like walking and cycling to work or school. For more information visit Clean Air Day, and receive free air quality alerts for many areas of Surrey by signing up to airTEXT.
