Pride badge making

Saturday 5 July, from 10.30am to 11.30am.

Get creative and make badges with other LGBTQ+ young people!

Under 18s only. Cost:  £1 per person.

Combined with: Family/Parents/Carers Social. Family, parents, and carers are invited to stay and socialise with others who care for young LGBTQ+ (or questioning) folk.

Refreshments provided.

Summer Reading Challenge children’s activities

Summer Reading Challenge runs from Saturday 5 July to Saturday 13 September.

The following activities will be available in the library during regular open hours:

David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation: Create a Creature

Tuesday 29 July at 10.30am to 11.30am.

Suitable for ages 5 to 10 years. Younger children will need more support.

Come along to our free creative workshop to find out about endangered animals with the support of the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation.

Learn about four different habitats where endangered animals live, then get creative and design and make your own creature in cardboard and craft materials. Children will think about why their creatures’ features will help it survive in its habitat.

Tickets are free and can be booked online. Booking is essential, one ticket for every child taking part.

Children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the session.

David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation: Terrific Tigers

Thursday 31 July from 2.30pm to 3.30pm

Suitable for ages 5 to 10 years. Younger children will need more support.

Come along to our free creative workshop to find out about endangered animals with the support of the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation.

Learn more about Terrific Tigers and then get crafty with a tiger face mask or tiger puppet activity.

Tickets are free and can be booked online. Booking is essential, one ticket for every child taking part.

Children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the session.

David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation: Make a 3D habitat

Tuesday 5 August from 10.30am to 11.30am.

Suitable for ages 5 to 10 years. Younger children will need more support.

Come to our workshop to find out about endangered animals with the support of the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation.

Children choose an animal form the eight we support and really think about their animal’s habitat, such as mountains for snow leopards or forests for chimpanzees. They then get crafty and create their habitat in 3D using card, scissors, and glue. Cutting out the animals can be difficult for young children but is possible.

Tickets are free and can be booked online. Booking is essential, one ticket for every child taking part.

Children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the session.

Lego club

Wednesday 6 August from 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

Suitable for ages 6 years and over.

Come along, get stuck into all the Lego and use your imagination to build amazing things about nature and beyond!

David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation: Are Elephants Afraid of Mice?

Thursday 7 August from 2.30pm until 3.30pm.

Suitable for ages 5 to 10 years. Younger children will need more support.

Come to our workshop to find out about endangered animals with the support of the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation.

The elephants have been trampling the farmer’s crops again! Learn more about these wonderful animals and then design and make your own models and schemes to keep the elephants away from the crops. Remember the elephants can be very sneaky! Tickets are free and can be booked online. Booking is essential, one ticket for every child taking part.

Suitable for ages 4 years and over.

Lego Club for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) families with a focus on autism. We will be running the autism friendly Lego session in one of our enclosed meeting rooms with space to build Lego creations either at a table or on the floor. There will be a quiet room available in the adjacent meeting room.

Children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the session.

Tickets are £1 per child. Booking is essential, one ticket for every child taking part.

Thursday 14 August from 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

Suitable for ages 7 to 11 years.

Learn how to draw a bird you might find in your back garden or any feathered friend you like!

Pebble rhymetime and storytime

Pebble rhymetime

  • Every Thursday, two sessions from
    • 10am until 10.30am
    • 11am until 11.30am

Spaces are limited. Tickets are available from the library desk on the day, one ticket per family group. Tickets allocated on a first come first served basis. Please come early to avoid disappointment.

Sensory rhymetime

A fun rhymetime for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) families with a focus on autism.

Selected Saturdays, 2 sessions, each session based on an age group:

  • 10.30 to 10.50am, for ages 0 to 4 years
  • 11.10 to 11.30am, for ages 5 to 9 years

Upcoming dates:

  • 26 July
  • 23 August
  • 20 September
  • 18 October
  • 15 November
  • 13 December

Free event. Maximum of 6 children plus their parent/carer

A designated room with low lighting, sensory toys and a separate "quiet" room next door.

Booking necessary. Parents attending sessions as a lone adult are welcome to bring along a maximum of two children. We understand that some children may need a higher level of support to ensure their safety and participation, and in these circumstances, it might be helpful for a lone parent to bring along one child only initially.

Storytime

Active storytime

Fridays in term time only, from 10.30am until 11am.

Active Storytime is a fun, interactive session aimed at pre-schoolers. We read a story, sing a song, and then do a couple of simple and fun activities (such as a game, a teddy bear hunt around the library, or a simple craft) on a different theme each week. Please wear clothes suitable for play/craft.

Suitable for ages 2 to 5.

No booking needed, just turn up!

Cost: £1 per child.

Reading groups

Horley library Tuesday reading group

Every third Tuesday of the month, from 2.30pm pm to 3.30pm.

Horley library Wednesday reading group

Every second Wednesday of the month, from 2pm to 3pm

This group is now full and is currently not accepting new people.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Questioning Plus (LGBTQ+) Reading Friends

First Saturday of the month, from 2.30pm to 4pm.

Surrey Libraries, in partnership with The Reading Agency, will be hosting a monthly Reading Friends group at Horley Library for members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Questioning Plus (LGBTQ+) community to come together around a shared love of reading.

Run by LGBTQ+ members of staff, the groups will have discussions and recommendations on a different subject each month. They will always be confidential, supportive, and positive spaces.

You can express an interest in joining this group by completing our online application form or by speaking to a member of staff in Horley Library.

Chatterbooks reading group

Horley Chatterbooks is a fun children’s reading group that meets once a month on a Saturday from 10am to 11am.

Suitable for children aged 7 to 11. The group reads a different book each month, and when we meet, we talk about the book and have fun with quizzes, games or crafts.

The group is currently full: to join our waiting list, please email horleylibraryevents@surreycc.gov.uk or ask at the library helpdesk.

Other events

Horley library local history centre

Horley Local History Centre is based in Horley Library, and you can use the local history centre resources at any time that the library is open.

Even better, visit us at the following time each week when volunteers are available to help you use the resources and equipment.

Saturday 10am to 12 noon. In the meantime should you have any history questions please contact jeanpelham@sky.com.

Board games club

Every Tuesday from 10.30am until 12 noon.

Join us in a welcoming and friendly environment to play a variety of board games, including Qwirkle, Mastermind, and Scrabble. Feel free to bring your own board or card game as well!

Open to all, free, just turn up.

English conversation group

Every Wednesday 10.30am to 11.30am

For adults with English as a second language.

Would you like to practice your spoken English with a relaxed and friendly group? Then come along and join us. The group will be led by friendly and supportive facilitators.

Free. No need to book.

Digital Support Volunteer

  • Wednesdays from 10am to 12 noon (term time only).
  • Alternate Fridays from 2.30pm until 4.30pm.

Need some IT help? Come along and see our friendly and approachable Digital Support Volunteer.

Appointment slots can be booked at the library desk.
