How to start volunteering

Looking for a volunteering role that fits your schedule and location? Your local Volunteer Centre is a great place to start. You can search for volunteering opportunities that match your interests online, or you can also contact your nearest Volunteer Centre directly. Whether you talk face-to-face or over the phone, people there can help you find the role that's right for you, give you advice, and answer any questions you may have.

Search for volunteering opportunities online

  • Central Surrey Voluntary Action lists opportunities in Elmbridge, Epsom and Ewell and Mole Valley. These can be searched by location, activity, flexibility and other criteria.
  • Voluntary Support North Surrey lists opportunities in Surrey Heath and Runnymede. These can be searched by location, flexibility and other criteria.
  • Voluntary Action South West Surrey lists opportunities in Guildford and Waverley. These can be searched by location, activity, flexibility and other criteria.
  • Voluntary Action Surrey East lists opportunities in Reigate and Banstead and Tandridge. These can be searched by location, flexibility and other criteria.
  • Reach Volunteering is a national volunteering charity that connects skilled volunteers with non-profits needing expertise. Opportunities can be searched by location and matched based on an individual's skills.

Talk to someone about volunteering

Before you contact your Volunteer Centre you may find it helpful to think about:

  • If there is a particular cause you would like to support
  • What skills you might want to use or develop through your volunteering
  • Where you would like to volunteer
  • How much time you feel you can offer

If you are a local group or organisation

You can also register with your local Volunteer Centre, where you can benefit from:

  • Opportunities, information, advice and support for volunteers
  • Help finding volunteers
  • Involvement in campaigns for volunteering

Whether you are a volunteer or a voluntary organisation there are also lots of resources on the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) that can help answer some of your questions.
