Update on Godstone road collapse

An underground tunnel has been located and further investigations continue

Since 17 February 2025, Highways Officers have been investigating the cause of the road collapse on Godstone High Street. They have also been planning how to fix the area so it can return to normal as soon as possible.

Investigations

As a result of borehole testing, an underground tunnel has been located eight metres underneath Godstone High Street. Exact details of the tunnel are yet to be confirmed with further specialist testing underway, but evidence suggests it is part of an old sand mine. The surveys will look to establish its exact length and position, as well as its relevance to ongoing investigations and how it is best repaired. Current options include filling or grouting the area to make it more stable in the future.

The cause of the road collapse remains under investigation.

Designing the repair plan

Once all other investigations and surveys are completed, a clear plan for repair works, including the sequencing for utility reconnections, will be designed. The site will need to be cleared in preparation for this. Highways Officers will work with utility companies to temporarily disconnect services and carry out additional excavations to allow for the repair works.

Repairing the area

The area affected by the road collapse, including the structure of the road, will be fully reconstructed. Pavements will also be repaired, and the road will be completely rebuilt. The team will continue to work with utility companies to ensure permanent reconnections of services. Once all repairs are completed, the site will be cleared to return the area to normal. We hope to have the road re-opened during December this year. However, our focus will be on ensuring the road is safe to use, so the exact date will be confirmed once we are fully assured of this.
