Home Energy Improvement One-Stop Shop

Page contents

The Home Energy Improvement One-Stop Shop is an innovative approach to tackling energy inefficiency across Surrey, and is funded by the UK Government's Local Energy Advice Demonstrator (LEAD) competition. It is designed to provide a range of benefits, including:

  • Lowering energy bills for Surrey residents.
  • Making Surrey homes more modern, resilient and future-proofed.
  • Improving the thermal comfort of homes, reducing damp and mould and associated health issues.
  • Reducing carbon emissions from the residential energy sector.

Approximately 300,000 homes in the county have energy performance ratings of D or worse, meaning that thousands of families and residents live in homes which are poorly insulated, expensive to run and with poor internal air quality.

Alongside the many health issues associated with poorly-insulated homes, residential energy accounts for over 30% of Surrey's carbon emissions, a figure which could be significantly lowered through improved energy performance, and reduced energy use.

Surrey County Council have teamed up with Furbnow, home energy experts, to launch the Home Energy Improvement One-Stop Shop, in what is one of the UK's most innovative energy-based collaborations between a local authority and private sector partner, and a great example of the practical benefits that Surrey's Net Zero strategy can have for our residents.

How it works

The service is designed to help residents that can afford to invest in long-term energy saving measures, such as insulation, solar panels and/or an air source heat pump, to access a qualified Retrofit Assessor and trusted installers, offering end-to-end support along the journey to improving the energy efficiency of their home, making long term cost-savings and their home greener in the process. Where possible, the service will seek to use local installers, in turn boosting the growing local retrofit market and supporting Surrey's economy. Win-win for everyone.

Eligible Surrey residents can access 60% off the cost to plan, design and manage their home energy project, and you can find out more, and receive a no-obligation quote, by visiting the Home Energy Improvement One-Stop Shop.

The council understands that many are unable to afford the upfront cost of energy-saving measures, regardless of the long-term saving potential and other co-benefits, especially in an ongoing cost of living crisis. Households to whom this applies are encouraged to seek support from the council's relevant schemes for those on lower incomes, including our Home Energy Advice Team (HEAT), which can support with energy debt, and a referral to a funding programme such as the Home Upgrade Grant. Households can also seek support from their energy supplier via the Energy Company Obligation (ECO4). Both of these schemes can provide up to £25,000 of energy efficiency improvements for eligible residents. The One Stop Shop will also in a future phase seek to signpost to appropriate green finance offers any households who are neither able to front the investment in measures themselves nor eligible for the above grant schemes for lower income households.

Watch the Question & Answer

Along with Furbnow, we hosted a webinar to mark the official launch of the new Home Energy Improvement One-Stop Shop service and offer residents the opportunity to ask any questions they had directly to the experts. We have hereby made the recording of the webinar available for anyone who wants to watch it back. Watch the video to find out more about the Furbnow retrofit process and our intentions for the service and the benefits you could see from a more energy efficient home. Watch to the end for an engaging Question & Answer (Q&A) which covered topics such as:

  • What is the best approach to cavity wall insulation in the many Surrey homes that have tile hung exterior walls?
  • What grants are available for heat pumps, how much energy will they save and how much disruption is involved to our internal heating system?
  • Do Furbnow's home surveys include thermal imaging?
  • How do you insulate the roof of a chalet bungalow?
