Department for Transport capital funding

The Department for Transport (DfT) provides capital funding for Highway Maintenance using a needs-based formula based on the highway assets each local authority is responsible for.

From 2025/26, councils need to share information about their road maintenance work to receive the full amount of funding from the Department for Transport (DfT). We produce our Local highways maintenance transparency report every year. This report shows how road maintenance funding is spent and what work has been completed. This helps local people see how the money is being spent and what difference it is making in their area.

Information on how allocations are calculated and details of allocations for 2020 to 2026 can be found on GOV.UK highway maintenance funding webpages.

Our current and future programmes of capital maintenance can be found on our highway maintenance investment programme webpage.
