Civil registration

Civil registration of births, marriages and deaths began in England and Wales in 1837.

You can order and pay for copies of Surrey birth, marriage and death certificates online using our online order form. Please see copy certificates for information about other ways to order Surrey certificates, the information included on certificates and the fees.

To order certificates outside the county of Surrey, please see the General Register Office website and for information about the GRO indexes.

The GENUKI website gives details of local registry offices in England and Wales.

Surrey History Centre holds microfiche copies of the General Registry Office (GRO) indexes for births, marriages and deaths in England and Wales for the years 1880-1930 only. We recommend that you book a microfiche reader in advance.

GRO indexes can also be searched on Ancestry and Findmypast websites which are free to use at Surrey History Centre and Surrey Libraries.

FreeBMD is an ongoing project to transcribe the civil registration index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales, and to provide free Internet access to the transcribed records.

If you are looking for information about births, marriages and deaths before 1837, please see our Guide to the Parish Registers, which lists the Surrey Parish Records held by Surrey History Centre.
