Surface water flooding occurs when heavy rainfall overwhelms local drainage systems and surface water infrastructure. Surface water management is a shared responsibility as surface water drainage networks range from local landowner drainage (homes) through to water utility company sewers. A Surface Water Management Plan (SWMP) is a partner project where surface water issues are identified in a catchment area in order to list a plan of action to manage the risk of flooding from surface water.

Guildford Surface Water Management Plan
Guildford Borough Council together with it's partners, Surrey County Council and the Environment Agency, commissioned by Halcrow Group Limited to undertake Surface Water Management plans in the Borough. The aims of the projects were to develop a sustainable approach to the management of surface water flood risk throughout Guildford Borough.
