Why put on cycle training in your school?

The ability to cycle safely is a vital life-long skill. High-quality cycle education enables children to become more confident and competent, more alert to potential risks and hazards, and enables them to really enjoy cycling whilst remaining safe on the road.

Cycle training can support your school travel plan, encouraging active and sustainable travel, and benefits children's health and wellbeing.

What is Bikeability?

Bikeability is the national cycle training programme. All our sessions are run by County Council staff who are professionally qualified Cycle Training Instructors.

Primary school

On Bikeability Level 1, riders learn to control and master their cycles in a space away from traffic, such as a playground. The course is typically 3 hours delivered in a single day for year 4 pupils.

Bikeability Level 2 takes place on local streets. Riders learn how to deal with traffic on quieter roads, progressing to ones that are a little busier if they are able to. The course is typically 7 and a half hours over 5 days, for year 6 pupils.

Secondary school

Year 7 students can also undertake Bikeability Level 2 if they missed it at primary school. Riders learn how to deal with traffic on quieter roads, progressing to ones that are a little busier if they are able to. The course is typically 7 and a half hours over 5 days.

All year groups can participate in the Independent Cycling to School course. This involves route planning to use cycle tracks and Level 2 roads as much as possible, then looking at ways to deal with busier or more complex parts of the journey where necessary.

Learn to Ride for all school ages

This is for complete beginners, those who cannot ride at all. The aim is to enable pupils to be able set off, pedal, steer and stop. This is a two-hour course delivered one-to-one.

How to book your cycle training

School staff can request training through our online system. Log in, request the type of training and number of pupils you think would like the training. We will offer some dates for your confirmation. Parents then book a place online, including their consent information, meaning administration is fairly straightforward from the school end.
