Feeling lonely?

If you are feeling lonely, there are things you can do, as well as organisations that can help.

Organisations

  • The Silver Line is the only free confidential helpline providing information, friendship, and advice to older people. It's open 24 hours a day, every day of the year: 0800 470 8090.

  • Contact the Elderly organises monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups of older people, aged 75 and over, who live alone.

  • Befriending services offer one-to-one support with trained volunteers. They provide emotional support at times of change or difficulty, and can make a real difference to people's lives. All befrienders belong to local support groups. To see one near you, visit Surrey Information Point.

Things you can do

  • Accessing the Internet, and learning how to use it, can help you connect with friends and family living far away. It's also an opportunity to re-establish old friendships, and form new ones. Surrey libraries offer access to computers, WiFi, and Digital Buddies – these are volunteers who can help you learn the basics and build your confidence. Age UK, Age Concern, and Citizens Advice can also support you to get online or use online services.

  • There are a range of clubs and activities that take place across Surrey each week everything from darts to knitting, bowls to art classes. Find something you enjoy doing on Surrey Information Point.

  • Volunteer your time to support someone else. There are many volunteering opportunities across Surrey. You could even join your local Timebank to share your skills or learn new ones.
