Road safety and sustainable travel for schools
Road safety, anti-social driving, obstructive parking, congestion and poor air quality are a prime concern of parents/carers on the school journey. It is also a prime concern for residents living near to schools. Surrey County Council provide a range of services to help schools tackle these problems.
School travel plans
A school travel plan sets out objectives and actions that the school will undertake to improve road safety and promote sustainable travel to reduce reliance on the car.
The national online school travel plan portal Modeshift STARS (supported by the Department for Transport) provides an online template and supporting materials for schools to create their school travel plan. We can provide free training and advice on how to use the Modeshift STARS portal. A successful school travel plan will promote healthier pupils, safer pupils, cleaner air and the school will gain a national accreditation award.
At the end of the academic year 2018/19 a total of 109 schools in Surrey were registered on Modeshift STARS. Of these 24 had achieved Bronze and one had achieved Silver Gold accreditation. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org 01483 517515 to register and seek advice and training on Modeshift STARS.
See the links below for more information on the services we provide that can form part of a school travel plan. Schools with a Modeshift STARS travel plan will be prioritised for the provision of these services.
