Physical and sensory support (PSS)

Our physical and sensory support service (PSSS) are a specialist education team. They support learning for children and young people in Surrey with physical, hearing, vision or communication impairment.

We work with:

  • Children and students throughout their education
  • Parents, carers and family members
  • Teachers and support staff
  • Other professionals including those from health and social services
  • Voluntary organisations

We become involved when:

  • A child or student's significant physical, sensory or communication impairment has been identified
  • Parents or professionals have made a referral to the service

We provide support in a variety of environments including:

  • Local Authority schools
  • Early Years settings and nurseries
  • Primary and Secondary specialist resource provisions (where appropriate)
  • The home (where appropriate)

We also provide support, which may be chargeable, to:

  • Colleges of further education
  • Universities
  • Independent schools

Our support includes:

  • Assessment of child or student's needs
  • Advice, information and signposting to other services
  • Classroom, curriculum and access support
  • Monitoring
  • Training for schools, families and professional teams
  • Facilitating communication through interpreting
  • Liaison between home and school
  • Contribution to Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)
  • Multi disciplinary working with other professionals
  • Provision and support of specialist equipment to include Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) technology and Assistive Technology (AT)
