Surrey Adult Learning artist goes to auction

Surrey Adult Learning (SAL) boasts a community of talented arts and crafts Learners who are supported by our experienced Tutors. Learner Kate Morgan, who attends classes at the Farnham Centre, recently sold an acrylic painting of Frensham Ponds at the sailing club. The painting raised £200 at a fund raiser held at Frensham sailing club. Funds raised went towards the cost of transporting a junior British sailing team to Buenos Aires in Argentina in December. They were competing against 10 other countries in the Cadet World Championship. Kate's daughter Anna was one of the 10 competitors in the British Team.

Kate was inspired to take up painting as a hobby when her daughter was preparing her Art GCSE. She invested in her own acrylic paint set and enrolled in a course at the Guildford Centre. In the beginning she thought, “I can’t do this”, however, over time, using feedback from her Tutor, Wendy Heath and with a lot of practice, Kate has become confident in her ability and is refining her skill.

Kate mainly works in acrylics, which is a useful medium as it is flexible and an artist can paint over it and make corrections. She mainly draws her sources of inspiration from photographs, reproducing the image on canvas. Her personal objective is to compose her own paintings, without reference support, from her imagination and to explore more varied techniques.

Kate enjoys the relaxed atmosphere of the class, Tutor Wendy is very experienced in delivering a lesson to mixed ability Learners and Kate was happy to share that she has made friends in the class, where everyone is welcome. The atmosphere in Wendy’s classes is relaxed and the perfect opportunity for a Learner to enjoy some “me time”!
