Surrey Supported Learning is proud to deliver a broad range of courses for adults with learning disabilities (LD). The courses are designed with a focus on gaining essential skills for life and to help learners to build confidence. There is a real sense of belonging in classes and valuable friendships are made and reinforced as part of attending the programme with us.
Learners benefit not only from teaching delivered by our qualified Tutors, and Supported Learning Assistants, but also the vital support of knowledgeable volunteers. The outcomes are promising, with our learners developing their talents and finding their individual pathways for progression onto other courses, building on the skills they have learnt and practised.
Learner Cheryl is proud to learn at the Camberley Centre
A warm welcome and a cheerful smile was given by learner Cheryl who is proud to say that she attends several supported learning classes with SAL at the Camberley Centre. Cheryl is clearly at home there, as she knows her way around and feels safe and content. She said, "I make my own way to my classes from town. I am trying to be more independent, and I feel good!"
Learning something new is an exciting process and she is expanding her history knowledge and gaining confidence attending the 'Exploring the Past and Present' course. The learners are taking a whistle stop trip through time learning about fascinating events in history such as the swinging sixties, Tudor History and the invention of the telephone, without which, we would all be lost today! All these topics are brought to life by Tutor Sue Dingley. The classroom was buzzing with lively discussions and healthy debates.
The group are encouraged to work on individual projects and together as a team. We offer smart facilities, including well-appointed classrooms that are bright and spacious with connectivity to tech that offer a positive environment to learn
Supported Learning Performing Arts
Learners attending the Performing Arts course are in the final stages of preparing and rehearsing their next drama production,' Warhorse'. There is a thrill of excitement as the learners work hard to research and prepare their performance which will take place on Thursday 23rd March 2023 in the Drama studio under the guidance of tutors Sue Dingley.
The drama productions delivered by the Performing Arts course demonstrate how much the learners gain from attending courses with SAL, as well teamwork and collaboration between learners and tutors attending the Creative Art class, tutored by Emily Geary who made wonderful props, which learner Cheryl shows above.
Learner Ryan makes SAL part of his routine, he enjoys learning together.
Learner Ryan enjoys attending courses as this forms part of his routine. He has developed a passion for photography and he is applying his new skills he has gained on his photography course with SAL.
Ryan walks to the Camberley centre, he feels good getting exercise and having a purpose to every day. He agreed that physical exercise complements his learning, all promoting good wellbeing.
He said, "I enjoy myself and it is really good to get out and about."
It was uplifting to visit a group of learners who are passionate about their learning journey and know that they are at the very heart of what SAL does best, because at Surrey Adult Learning we nurture our learners to thrive and feel valued as individuals.
