Art Learner finds his niche with the help of a Surrey Adult Learning course

Learner David Crosby came to Surrey Adult Learning (SAL) in 2016, in order to attend art classes at the Guildford Centre with tutor, Sophie Artemis. He had completed a few courses at the Ochre Print Studio in Guildford, and is passionate about printmaking, but he felt he needed to improve his drawing ability. David worked hard with Sophie to refine and develop his technique.

David said: "Sophie helped me view my art differently, work out of my comfort zone, and build confidence in my abilities. She was very good and insightful, helping with composition and instinctively knowing what worked and what didn't. The rest of the group were really friendly and supportive."

"Today, I am one of two Ochre Artists-in-Residence for 2019 at the studio. I rediscovered printmaking a few years ago at Ochre Print Studio, and through the courses I have attended, the Open Access sessions, the help and encouragement of the Artists-in-Residence, and participating in the Summer Exhibitions, The Ochre Artist-in-Residence opportunity came at an exciting time for me – as I have been thinking about where to take my art next."

"The position will enable me to extend my knowledge and practice of printmaking, think more about my art, and build up a body of work."

"I have been focused on lino printing up to now, but have recently started exploring both dry point and etching. During this year I am aiming to produce work using a combination of the printmaking processes on offer, drawing inspiration from mythology, literature, AI, early silent films, and film theory in general."

"One of the main strengths of Ochre is the people, and their willingness to share their knowledge, skills and experience. For me, it would be particularly rewarding to help people participate and gain from the opportunities Open Access provides."Ochre Print Studio logo

"Having experienced the change from beginner to Open Access regular myself, I hope I can help others take that step. I would also like to collaborate with other artists, so please let me know if you are interested."

Ochre Print Studio is an open access fine art print studio, welcoming and encouraging artists and printmakers of all abilities to engage in the creative processes of traditional printmaking and contemporary print technology. You can find out more about it on the Ochre Print Studio website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
